One of the first things you have to do after getting engaged is to pick your wedding party. So, who’s who and what does each role entail? While there are traditional wedding party roles that you can choose to include, it's ultimately up to you and your partner to decide who you want to participate in your special day. You might want to have a mixed wedding party, have no bridesmaids at all, or even swap a human for a pup. Your wedding, your rules!

Here’s a quick and easy guide to who's who in the wedding party to help get you started!

Who to Include in the Wedding Party

Let’s face it, choosing your wedding party can be difficult. The last thing you want is to offend anyone by leaving them out. However, who you want to include in your special day is a personal decision. To keep things simple, those in your wedding party should be your best friends, siblings, and perhaps a close family member or two.

Maid/Matron or Man of Honor

The maid or matron of honor is the bride's right-hand woman. Also known as the bride's honor attendant, this role is usually taken by the bride’s best friend or sister. If the bride's best bud and confidante is male, whether a friend or a sibling, she may choose to have a man of honor . It’s the highest honor in the wedding party and comes with a fair share of responsibilities. The maid/matron or man of honor helps the bride with all aspects of the wedding from planning to selecting the bridesmaids’ dresses.

In the lead-up to the special event, they are responsible for things like attending dress fittings and planning the bachelorette party. During the day itself, they are there to offer emotional support to the bride as well as provide hands-on help with things like bustling the gown or fixing the veil.

Best Man

The best man serves many of the same duties as the maid of honor. For that reason, the groom will usually choose his best friend or brother to fulfil this role. This person will stand by the groom’s side during the wedding and will also offer any support that’s needed throughout the day. The best man has a couple of core duties : plan the bachelor party, write a speech for the reception, help make wedding arrangements and, in some cases, hold onto the rings until the wedding ceremony.

Groomsmen

The groomsmen are the male counterparts to the bridesmaids and, as such, they take on many of the same duties. They are usually close friends or relatives of the groom and will be involved in many of the events in the lead-up to the wedding, such as the bachelor party. The groomsmen are there to support the groom in any way he may need. If there are no ushers, this group may welcome guests upon arrival and show them to their seats. Traditionally, groomsmen stand next to the groom during the wedding ceremony. They may also take on fun tasks such as decorating the getaway car.

Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids are close friends or relatives of the bride. While bridesmaids are traditionally women, in recent years mixed-gender bridal parties have grown increasingly common. This group takes an active role in the planning of the wedding. They are also expected to help the maid of honor plan the bridal shower and, in some circumstances, split the cost of this event. On the wedding day, the bridesmaids walk down the aisle ahead of the bride. Bridesmaids often take on other responsibilities during the wedding as well. For instance, they may show guests to their seats or hand out favors

Flower Girl

While not all brides and grooms choose to have a flower girl , this role is a charming addition to any wedding party. Often a niece, younger sibling, or family friend, the flower girl walks down the aisle with the bridesmaids, dropping petals as she goes. She may also wear a bohemian flower headdress to mark her role in the occasion.

The male counterpart to the flower girl is the page boy. He may walk alongside the flower girl when the wedding party heads down the aisle. Most of the time, this role is taken by a young boy who is part of the family or a close family friend.

Ring Bearer

As the name suggests, the ring bearer is the one who carries the rings down the aisle. This person could be another member of the wedding party—the best man, the page boy, or the flower girl, for instance. However, you may want to appoint another member of the family to take on the role or, if you’re feeling whimsical, the family pet could take the role.

Mother of the Groom (MOTG)

The mother of the bride (MOTB) often takes center stage, but the mother of the groom has an equally important role. She is there to lend support to her son, should he need it, and be a host at the event. In some cases, she may also take part in planning the wedding and can give a speech as part of the wedding reception as well.

Father of the Groom (FOTG)

The father of the groom does not have many formal responsibilities, but that’s not to say he can’t play an active role in the special event. Depending on your wishes, he may help organise aspects of the wedding, give a reading, and welcome guests to the event.

Officiant

Whether you’re having a religious or non-denominational wedding, you will need to choose an officiant for the big day. This person may be a religious cleric or a celebrant. The role can greatly impact the wedding as the officiant performs the ceremony and is mainly responsible for taking care of the paperwork, including the marriage license.

Ushers

Often confused with the groomsmen, this group has fewer duties in both the lead-up and during the wedding. Ushers wear matching suits that can be different from the groomsmen’s attire. Their duty is to greet guests and show them to their seats. Friends of the bride and groom may take on this esteemed role.

This may have been something that you have been waiting for, for quite some time, and now it’s finally here or perhaps it was more of a shock. Now, you may be left wondering what the next stages are after your engagement and in what order. But before you start to stress, don’t worry you are in the right place and we are here to help!

Planning a wedding is a timely process –so you don’t need to start planning the moment you say “yes” to your significant other. Every couple’s timeline is different and you don’t need to compare how quickly or slowly you decide to get down to the planning process.

When it comes to the timings of everything, it can be confusing – Who do you tell? When do you plan the engagement party for? What planning tasks do you need to tackle first? These are common questions that many engaged couples wonder; luckily I have the answers for you.

Here we break down what to do now the proposal has happened.

Break the news

One of the first steps after you’ve got engaged is to share your happy news. Take a much, or as little time as you like! Some couples want to tell everyone as soon as possible and have the Instagram announcement posted before their partners had time to get up from their knees, while others may like to keep it a secret for a little longer. When you are ready to tell people make sure you’ve told immediate family and friends before posting to social media. Once your immediate family and closest friends are in on the news – you can go public and get your relationship status changed on Facebook.

Enjoy being engaged

Once you have shared the news take as long as you can to just enjoy the experience with your fiancé. Relax, don’t jump straight into the planning and just enjoy being engaged for a little while. You may decide to have a party or arrange an engagement shoot.

Of course, if you are planning a shorter engagement or you just want to get straight into the planning then you may not want to delay the planning for too long – do whatever feels right for the two of you.

It’s also worth mentioning in this section that you may want to get your ring insured. It’s a pretty sentimental piece of jewellery after all.

Get organised

When you are ready to get down to the wedding planning – I'd suggest getting an organiser or a planner to keep everything in one place. There will be a lot to coordinate over the next few months. Get into the habit of keeping important information in a specific place – there's nothing more frustrating than trying to hunt out a contract or rsvp’s when you really need them.

Start to think about what kind of wedding you are wanting to have. A formal gathering? a relaxed outdoor wedding? Do you want a church? If you have no ideas where to start think about what kind of personalities you have as people, do you enjoy a good party or are you happier at smaller, more intimate gatherings? The Internet is a great help when it comes to planning a wedding. Pinterest and Instagram are great places to start. Create your own mood board and pin things that appeal to you, it’ll be handy when showing your suppliers colours, the atmosphere and moods you want to recreate for your day.

Next, it’s time to think about what’s important to you as a couple. You may have always wanted a hog roast at your wedding or to arrive by horse and cart, if you have something that you have always had your heart on then you should have it – and if you have a budget, make savings elsewhere.

Set aside some time to plan

Once you have chosen a wedding date, start a list of tasks that need planning. I would recommend setting aside some time with your significant other to go through those plans between now and the wedding. Planning is best done in stages so as not to get overwhelming. Don’t let wedding planning take over date night, as it’s still important to set time away from planning as a couple. By allotting time specifically to tackle your wedding to-dos you’ll accomplish so much more than just getting round to it whenever.

Make a list of what each of you is going to do and split the tasks so that you can both be involved. This will keep both of you involved, every step of the way. Keep communicating too so that you don’t end up contacting the caterer twice or booking two florists! Your partner may not want to be so involved in choosing the decorations for the tables and so that can go on your list and you may decide that you are happy for them to choose the evening entertainment and so that’ll go on theirs. Have some tasks that you’ll do together too and you’ll soon get into the swing of wedding planning.

When the planning gets tough, take a break from it all. It will wait. Spend the time to reconnect as a couple and get excited about the day ahead.

Woodland Wedding – Abigail & Caitlin

Woodland venues are the perfect setting for summer weddings in South Wales. When our couple came to me with this beautiful location Cleppa Park Cottage as their canvas, I was excited to start the planning process and to put all the details they dreamed up into place.

Abi & Cait wanted to make sure that their big day was full of rustic sustainable details, with a fun, magical ambiance.

Flowers are a huge part of any wedding, whether you are having a big celebration or something a little more intimate. It’s probably the only day of your life that you get to carry around a beautiful bouquet, so why not make the most of it?

Most people love fresh flowers and naturally want to have them as part of their wedding day, but don’t have much idea on all of the names, possibilities or what is in season and when. Given that the price of wedding flowers can typically be take up a sizable chunk of the wedding budget it’s no wonder that choosing a wedding florist is up there in one of the most important decisions couples will make in their planning process.

Flowers will not only contribute to your wedding attire during the day but it will also add to the look of your ceremony and reception spaces too. They will be in all the wedding photo's.

Some couples will decide to do their own flowers. Whilst this is occasionally a cheaper option, it is by no means an easy task!

Bridgerton Wedding Ideas That Would Get Royal Approval

Did you get caught up in the Netflix craze that was Bridgerton?

Whether you’re the show’s biggest fan, you just fell in love with all the romance or even if you haven’t managed to watch the series…it’s hard to ignore Modern-Day Regency inspiration sweeping the wedding scene.

From elegant fashion to pastel colour themes making a strong comeback, Bridgerton wedding inspiration is at full fever pitch. And with the new series landing on Netflix this month – it’s going to be influencing weddings for a good while yet.

If you are thinking of recreating the Bridgerton and having a wedding day that even Lady Whistledown herself would say was the “most remarkable triumph of the season” then you’re in the right place!

An Impressive Venue fit for a Queen

I t’s hard to think of Bridgerton without thinking of the impressive sets and grand ballrooms. The ultimate way to transport everyone into the elegant affair that’s about to be your wedding, is to choose a regency inspired place to say your vows. Look for a venue with wow factor on approach to set the scene for your wedding day with a Georgian feel to match with buildings of the era. As at least part of your wedding day will be spent indoors, we can’t mention Bridgerton without thinking of the spectacular ballroom scenes, great halls and fairytale staircases, which would make for a beautiful, grand entrance to say your vows.

If the romantic walks in the park caught your eye and you’d be more suited to an outdoors wedding – look for venues with private, well-maintained lawns and whimsical floral landscaping – think follies, mazes and gorgeous gardens.

Decorations fitting for a Duchess

Regency blue was a signature colour of the period in which Bridgerton is set. It’s a soft but striking colour that was used in everything from fashion to architecture of the time. Luckily it’s a gorgeous shade that suits most wedding themes. From a more relaxed wedding and incorporating the colour in table runners and chintzy glass bottles filled with blooms at a rustic wedding to grand tablescapes at a more formal style wedding.

It’s also a colour that pairs well with a lot of others so you can use it as subtlety or as strongly as you like. Regency Blue pairs particularly well with peachy shades. This gorgeous duo can be used in so many ways throughout your Bridgerton inspired wedding. From peach-flavoured cocktails, peach coloured blooms look delightful adorning long wooden trestle tables nestled in between softer blue shades and you could incorporate both colours into your wedding party attire too.

Similarly Regency Blue works well on it’s own. Another way to use Regency blue in your colour scheme is in your table settings. Blue napkins wrapped with a plain, white ribbon and olive leaves look beautiful together and will certainly elevate your table setting.

I can’t do the series or the historical period justice without mentioning the flowers. Hydrangeas, wildflowers, and cleverly placed petals along the aisle, in the wedding scene, elevated the on-screen sets and can be recreated on a budget too.

Handwritten Stationery that rivals Lady Whistledown’s writing

Embrace the grandness of your occasion and send handwritten invitations to your guest list. Find a calligrapher or stationer who will work with you to incorporate the look you are going for into your wedding stationery.

Handwritten invitations and place cards will set the tone of your wedding day and it always feel a little bit special to receive an invitation in this way.

I love the idea of adding a handwritten note to each guest at his or her place in a beautiful envelope. It’ll be a lovely surprise and could replace the need for favours too. Writing individual handwritten notes can be a lengthy process, but it’s a lovely gesture that your guests will appreciate. Stick to writing one or two lines thanking them for sharing your day with you and perhaps sharing a favourite memory. You can get personalised note cards from your stationer and it adds that special touch. You could also add a wax seal for total luxury or add a few sprigs of dried flowers or leaves to your stationery for that Regal feel.

A Reception fit for Royalty

Who says you need to spend a fortune on your reception? Weddings of the time were smaller affairs and you can still create a luxury, regal feel no matter your guest list size or your budget! In the last season the only extravagant element we saw in the Bridgerton wedding between Daphne and Simon, was their wedding cake the rest of the focus was spent purely on the emotion of the occasion.

The easiest way to recreate your Bridgerton style catering for the wedding without spending a fortune is by having a grazing table. Grazing table companies are fabulous at creating impressive displays and are accustomed to making sure all of your guests catering needs are taken care of too- whether it’s vegetarian, vegan or gluten free.

If grazing platters or a wedding breakfast doesn’t suit your style than an afternoon tea can work really well. Luckily it’s totally on trend for a Bridgerton-inspired wedding too. Collect china plates, cups and saucers and serve mini sandwiches, scones and patisserie. You could lay on fresh pots of tea or serve cocktails and alcohol with an English Country twist – including herbs you would grow in the garden or fresh rose. Afternoon tea is perfect for an early afternoon ceremony
